Book Study: Beyond Compliance in Early Childhood Education: Centering Disability, Freedom, and Belonging (webinars and assignments)
Learning Level 1: Introductory/Awareness
Intended Audience – Administrators, ECSE/General Education Educators, Social Workers, SLPs, OT/PTs
Description – In this book study, we will explore how critical perspectives on disability can inform our work with children, families, and teachers in early childhood education. We will perform this exploration by reading and discussing a variety of contributions from authors who center disability and prioritize children’s perspectives, with topics such as: alternative means of inclusion and belonging; critical multiliteracy curriculums; celebrating disability history and disabled communities in early childhood classrooms; cultivating liberatory pedagogies in early childhood; and imagining liberated languaging in early childhood. Each registrant accepted into the book study will be provided with the book. The confirmation email will have detailed instructions for completing the first assignment which is due BEFORE the first meeting. The assignments, which account for a portion of the total continuing education hours, will include reading sections of the book and responding to questions set up in Survey Monkey. They are designed to foster individual reflection and analysis of the content so that each member of the group feels ready to contribute to and benefit from productive meetings with the group.
