A great resource for supporting the development of social-emotional skills in early childhood!
This bilingual (English and Spanish) app is designed to help teach children skills such as problem solving, self-control, planning, and task persistence.
Children are able to support the adorable little monster through the “Breathe-Think-Do” strategy for problem-solving as he encounters everyday challenges such as feeling frustrated when he cannot get his shoes on by himself or feeling disappointed when his block tower falls down – all situations that our young children can relate to. Children help the monster to take three slow breaths, to think of some possible solutions, and then to try one out.
I really appreciate how this app supports children’s emotional literacy by labeling and describing the emotions that the monster is feeling, along with describing his facial expressions and body language. It helps children to recognize emotions; to understand how to calm down (self-regulate); and to begin to solve problems – all really important skills to teach in early childhood!
Another neat feature of this app is the “Parent Section” that is filled with tips and strategies on important topics such as “Practicing Patience,” “Overcoming Mistakes,” “Handling Mean or Aggressive Behavior” and much more. This section also includes a “Breathe with Monster” activity that is designed to help the children practice the skill of taking three deep breaths. The encouraging phrases that are used throughout the app can even be personalized by recording the voice of a family member, a teacher or even a child.
Requires iOS 8.0 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Designed for children ages 2-5 years old. Free.
