Family Engagement: Focus on Engaging Families in the Classroom (webinar)

Learning Level 1: Introductory/Awareness

Intended Audience: Administrators, ECSE and General Educators, Teacher Assistants, Family Members, Family Educators, Psychologists, Social Workers, SLP’s, OT/PT’s

This introductory webinar will focus on the importance of building relationships between families and the school/childcare providers. We will discuss the difference between family involvement and family engagement and will focus on the importance of engaging families in the process of creating and implementing program activities.

Continuing Education – This webinar will provide 1.5 contact hours for the following:

  • Educator License Renewal
  • CDA (Child Development Associate) credit in area(s) 4
  • CE credit for SLP, SW, LCPC, PT, and OT professionals
  • Gateways to Opportunity credit in area E (Org. ID# B40093)

Full participation is required to receive a certificate.

  • Mary Smith
    Mary Smith is a Family Resource Specialist for STARnet Regions I & III. She has experienced all aspects of raising a child with special needs since the birth of her son, Patrick, in 1988. She has worked with parents in the Early Intervention System and served as a Parent Liaison for Child and Family Connections. She has completed numerous trainings and has attended conferences regarding special education and legal rights. She has presented at numerous conferences and workshops.
  • Roseann Slaght
    Roseann Slaght has worked as a Family Resource Specialist for STARnet for 23 years. Her goals are to embrace inclusive practices, and find ways to support each child in order to develop their full potential, and include parents as partners in the learning process. She is a parent of two adult men with significant disabilities. In her spare time, she is also a licensed Massage Therapist. Rose earned her degree in Child Development.
  • Bridget Meis
    Bridget Meis, M.S. Ed, is an Early Childhood Resource Specialist for STARnet Regions I & III. During her time with STARnet, she has presented on a variety of topics including: Apps and Assistive Technology, Social/Emotional development, Creative Curriculum, Teaching Strategies GOLD, Portfolios, Lesson Planning, Mathematics in Early Childhood, Science and Mathematics, STEAM and Family Engagement. Bridget has worked in the field of Early Childhood Education since 2003. She received her Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education from Illinois State University and her Master's degree in Early Childhood Education from Erikson Institute. Bridget has worked in a variety of early childhood programs with diverse groups of children from as young as six weeks old to children in fifth grade. Bridget has served children and families in private childcare programs and most recently with Head Start.
  • Cecilia Mintz
    Cecilia Mintz, B.S. Ed, is an Early Childhood Resource Specialist for STARnet Regions I & III. She has worked in Early Childhood since 2007. Cecilia has worked with a diverse population at Head Start. While working with Head Start she guided children with Project Approach. Cecilia worked at engaging families in their child’s education by encouraging their input on family goals involving their child. She collaborated with local education agencies on IEPs.
