Setting up Inclusive Early Childhood Classrooms
Learning Level 1: Introductory/Awareness
Intended Audience – Administrators, ECSE/General Educators, Paraeducators, Family Members, Family Educators, Psychologists, Social Workers, SLPs, OT/PTs, Early Intervention
Description – Looking at the classroom through the lens of all learners! During this workshop we will take a deeper dive into setting up the classroom environment to meet the needs of all children! Presenters and participants will share strategies and brainstorm ideas for adaptations to create an inclusive learning environment for all children in their care. Participants will also have the opportunity to visit and observe an early childhood classroom. A post classroom tour will allow time for sharing and reflecting!
Continuing Education – This training will provide 5 contact hours for the following:
- Educator License Renewal
- CDA (Child Development Associate) credit in area(s) 2
- CE credit for SLP, SW, LCPC, PT, and OT professionals
- Gateways to Opportunity credit in area E (Org. ID# B40093, Event ID# )
Full attendance is required to receive a certificate.

Sherial McKinney
Sherial McKinney, M.S. Ed., is an Early Childhood Resource Specialist for STARnet Regions I and III. She has taught and worked in the field of early childhood education for over 40 years. Sherial has taught Early Childhood Special Education in a self-contained setting and in a blended program with students enrolled in the Pre-K at Risk and Preschool for All programs. She has also taught Kindergarten, Title I Reading and Math for grades K-8, and in a federally-funded child care program. Sherial has provided staff development and training opportunities for teachers, support staff, administrators and family members at a variety of local, state, regional, and national conferences. She provides trainings on various topics such as Math, Literacy, Illinois Early Learning and Development Standards, Early Learning Scale Assessment, Work Sampling System-Illinois, and several other topics. -
Connie Shugart
Connie Shugart, Project Coordinator STARnet Regions I & III, has over 30 years of experience working in the field of early childhood education. Her experiences include teaching and/or training of early childhood and early intervention professionals and families. She has done presentations at many regional, state and national conferences. A few of her topics include curriculum, assessment, standards, environments, child development, and play. Connie is also one of the Executive Producers and hosts of Apples Magazine training videos. Her passions include educating professionals and families on play and the impact that the early childhood environment has on teaching and learning. -
Sheila Yates
Sheila Yates, M. Ed Early Childhood Administration, is an ECSE Family and Professional Development Specialist for STAR NET Regions I and III. She has experience teaching preschool as well as leading teams of early childhood professionals in community-based organizations. Sheila is passionate about providing resources and education to professionals and families on the impact that quality environments and relationships have on young children.
