You’re Going to Love This Kid: Educating Autistic Students in the Inclusive Classroom

Learning Level 1: Introductory/Awareness

Intended Audience – Administrators, ECSE/General Educators, Paraeducators, Family Members, Family Educators, Psychologists, Social Workers, SLPs, OT/PTs, Early Intervention

Description – In this interactive session, participants will learn practical ways of supporting students with autism spectrum labels and other disabilities. Topics addressed include defining (and redefining) autism, listening to the voices of autistic children, and seeing inclusion as a process. Practical strategies will be provided including several relating to communication and social skill development (e.g., gaze avoidance), teaching to special interests, and movement. This session is specifically focused on rethinking—rethinking inclusion, rethinking autism, and rethinking possibilities for all students.

There will be a one-hour lunch break beginning around 11:30am.

Continuing Education – This training will provide 5 contact hours for the following:

  • Educator License Renewal
  • CDA (Child Development Associate) credit in area(s) 3
  • CE credit for SLP, SW, LCPC, PT, and OT professionals
  • Gateways to Opportunity credit in area E (Org. ID# B40093, Event ID# )

Full attendance is required to receive a certificate.

  • Paula Kluth

    Dr. Paula Kluth is a consultant, author and independent scholar who works with teachers and families to provide inclusive opportunities for students with disabilities. She is a former K-12 special educator who has served as a classroom teacher and inclusion facilitator. Paula has also been a university professor and has taught courses on inclusion and disability studies. She is the author or co-author of 15 books including Universal Design Daily; “You’re Going to Love This Kid!”: Teaching Students with Autism in Inclusive Classrooms; and Coaster (a story of a puppy with wonderful wheels).
