Full STEAM Ahead: Problem-Solving with Storybooks to Foster an Inclusive Classroom

Learning Level 2: Intermediate/Application

Intended Audience – ECSE/General Educators, Paraeducators, Family Members, Family Educators,

Description – This hands-on workshop will focus on identifying conflicts in familiar stories and using loose parts and a STEAM approach to problem-solve the story conflicts. Participants will work in small groups to plan for ways to include children with specific disabilities through provided scenarios in order to provide access and opportunities for full participation in STEAM activities with peers.

There will be a one-hour lunch break beginning around 11:30am.

Continuing Education – This training will provide 5 contact hours for the following:

  • Educator License Renewal
  • CDA (Child Development Associate) credit in area(s) 2
  • CE credit for SLP, SW, LCPC, PT, and OT professionals
  • Gateways to Opportunity credit in area D (Org. ID# B40093, Event ID# )

Full attendance is required to receive a certificate.

Presenter(s)

  • Bridget Meis
    Bridget Meis, M.S. Ed, is an Early Childhood Resource Specialist for STARnet Regions I & III. During her time with STARnet, she has presented on a variety of topics including: Apps and Assistive Technology, Social/Emotional development, Creative Curriculum, Teaching Strategies GOLD, Portfolios, Lesson Planning, Mathematics in Early Childhood, Science and Mathematics, STEAM and Family Engagement. Bridget has worked in the field of Early Childhood Education since 2003. She received her Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education from Illinois State University and her Master's degree in Early Childhood Education from Erikson Institute. Bridget has worked in a variety of early childhood programs with diverse groups of children from as young as six weeks old to children in fifth grade. Bridget has served children and families in private childcare programs and most recently with Head Start.
  • Cecilia Mintz
    Cecilia Mintz, B.S. Ed, is an Early Childhood Resource Specialist for STARnet Regions I & III. She has worked in Early Childhood since 2007. Cecilia has worked with a diverse population at Head Start. While working with Head Start she guided children with Project Approach. Cecilia worked at engaging families in their child’s education by encouraging their input on family goals involving their child. She collaborated with local education agencies on IEPs.
  • Sheila Yates
    Sheila Yates, M. Ed Early Childhood Administration, is an ECSE Family and Professional Development Specialist for STAR NET Regions I and III. She has experience teaching preschool as well as leading teams of early childhood professionals in community-based organizations. Sheila is passionate about providing resources and education to professionals and families on the impact that quality environments and relationships have on young children.
